Escaped from the Shrine

Personal project re-imagining some of the creatures from the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, a Wizards of the Coast adventure for Dungeons and Dragons.

Having made it through the dungeon my player congratulated themselves on a job well done. One player went back on thier own because they had forgotten something.....and to save his skin let all the ones he missed loose. Now they have to deal with that problem.

With my game set in the Malazan world (wonderful books) I needed to adapt the temples narrative a bit and changed Zotzilaha, the vampire god of death into my own creation, The Herald of Hood. Now as a Herald of Death Zotz has his own little temple and a bunch of fellow shapeshifters to hand out with, only problem is they are as nutty as a bunch of fruit cakes...And now they are free.

Ayocuan: male in the original adventure and rather dull. I had the idea that she is accompanied by a swarm of Crawling Claws, created from the severed hands of criminals she removed while alive. I also liked the idea that she was pleased with her vast beauty in life, so wore very little, now in death we have a Wight covered in severd hands crawling all over her body.

Xipe, our lord of the flayed Skins: A wonderful character which benefited for new stats for living flayed skin. With an NPC left behind by my players it was great fun to create the skinned version of this loved character.

Zotzilaha: The Herald of Death himself. In the Malazan books there are creatures called "Cape Moths" large ash grey moths that come out at night and drink the blood of the dead. There are also shapeshifters who can turn into multiple animals, so why not one who becomes a whole swarm? And being a fan of "The Beast" from The Magicians, I decided to give him a head of swarming moths as well.

Oh God it is a Moth!: Long ago I realised I could re-skin a D&D Roc as Mothra. Latter I realised that my Moth headed herald could have a mount.....this is the result...dam Roc's are big.

Tloques-Poplocas, Master of the others: A male vampire in the published adventure who I switched to female in order to prey on my male players habit of being less likely to kill on site woman. Creating an interesting pose was a challenge as she is both capable of diplomacy and blind rage. To make her stand out more I made use of the huge back peace, which created its own problems.

Ayocuan. Her swarms of hands come kertasy of my family

I am pleased how well these turned out as I had never planned to draw a flayed human skin from above before.

Moth variants for the Herald. I created a custom brush and experimented a lot with placement.

The two most promising designs with experiments into how to highlight the moths.

The Herald has a head of only moths..."The Magicians" fans get the idea. This layout best conveyed his swarming head from above which was a real challenge.

"Oh God it is a Moth!" I needed to maintain the attacks from the Roc this is statted as and I wanted to ensure it wasn't just a giant moth, but its own unique creature.

Tloques-Poplocas was a hard on to pose, with both a diplamatic side, and a berserker rage. The back peace was a great idea...until I tried to use my normal fast shadow style. I am however very pleased with the result.
